Mount Jefferson is one of the best trails in the area for wildflower and landscape viewing. The trail starts on the west side of the parking area. A gentle grade downhill with some uphill and then more downhill to Lake Marie.
Date of Hike: Saturday, June 19, 2021
Distant Point to Point: 4.2 miles
Elevation gain: be aware that if we make it down to the lake we will have to start going uphill on the way back.
Forest: Caribou-Targhee National Forest in Ashton-Island Park Ranger District
Directions
The trailhead is 1.7 miles below the peak marked at a bend in the road.
- The trailhead is located on a hairpin curve 9.8 miles from the highway. Some maps show the trail leaving a little further up the road, but that entry has been removed. The current trailhead is marked by a small sign that designates the trail as a “no motorized vehicle” trail at a wide spot where three or four cars may park.
- From Idaho Falls, Idaho head north on Highway 20 approximately 85 miles (about 1.5 miles north of Mack’s Inn) to a turn to the west on to Sawtell Peak Road. The road is approximately 13 miles to the top of the mountain and climbs 3,440 feet in elevation.
- Meeting: Fred Meyer/ Mc Donald’s parking Lot at 8:00 AM or at the trailhead at 9:00 on Saturday, June 19, 2021
- Contact Susan McKinley at susan@idahoalpineclub.org if you are coming.
